I am sure you know how much I plan for these trips, so when I mess up it comes as a shock to me.
When we left Huntington Beach State Park, we had a reservation in a park outside of Georgetown which is the second oldest city in South Carolina. See how much history you can learn from these posts; it is almost like home schooling. It was only 18 miles away, but traffic on the one lane, only highway 17 is very slow, it took about an hour to get there and it is off season, wouldn’t want to be here in season. Since we like to eat, we stopped first to have lunch in town. I was so hungry and my grilled grouper sandwich looked so good, I forgot to take a picture. The sandwich was delicious and the cucumber slaw was a cross between pickles and a lettuce salad, very tasty. After lunch we walked around town a bit and it is a very nice place with shops and old building and a marina. This town also got the message about how to treat tourist and we had a great time talking to people.
From there we went to our campground. It was 5 miles but about a half hour away. The bay that is the marina flows into a river when we crossed the river to where the campground was the area changed. We are used to being in rough areas when we camp sometimes, but this was elevated roughness. When we arrived at the campground down a very narrow gravel road cut through the woods with ditches on either side, there was a locked gate with chain linked fence all around. I called the office and they gave me a code to get in. I look at every picture available and the pictures looked very nice with what appeared to be a deck looking over a busy marina. It was apparent the pictures were carefully staged. The marina had about half the boats in the picture and the picture had two docks with 4 areas for boats all filled up. The actual marina was one lane with many slots empty. When I looked back at the picture, I noticed it was edited, the two docks were identical with the same boats in each picture. What looked like a big deck was a small porch on one of the cabins. The angle of the picture made it look like the water came right up to the deck and was relatively deep. There was also a blurb about fishing off their docks. The spots were very close together there was no office, no laundry, no shop. I asked if we could get a cab or Uber to town and the woman who owns the place said, no they won’t come out here. It was so bad I only took 2 pictures. It was late Friday, we had a 4-night reservation we already paid for and it was hot, no shade here either. We did not go outside. When we woke up Saturday, we had already decided it was so depressing even though we did not want to drive to town, it is hard to park this thing, we would do that anyway. While Jerry was packing up, I thought this is crazy to stay here it is really bad. When he came in I asked if he had everything packed or did he leave anything. After he said why, I told him I found a KOA outside of Charleston and there was one site available for Saturday night and the rest of the days were no problem. He said what about the money, since we had paid for the campground from hell and would not get a refund. I said, it won’t kill me to loose about $150 but it might kill me to stay here 3 more nights. I said do you want to go, it was the fastest yes I have ever heard from Jerry. I then looked up on line the campground and found a newspaper article about a woman staying there for work who was being harassed by a worker there. She went to the police to file a complaint and was told he was a known felon, so maybe it could have killed me. Now we are in the KOA.
We stopped for lunch yesterday in Mt. Pleasant which is just over the bridge from Charleston. We looked a bit around and came to the campground and were surprised how much they had going on. It is the big Halloween weekend which is why it was completely full last night, this afternoon about a quarter full. There was a kid costume party, a dog costume party, outdoor movies and smores with pumpkin peeps. We had an ice cream and sat down and watched the It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, as good as all the other times I have seen it. This morning it was pancake breakfast and then we took Ernie to the large dog park. Jerry plans to watch the Bears later and after dinner is caramel apple bar treats. Tomorrow, they do have Ubers that come here and we will spend the day in Charleston. Tuesday onto Congaree National Park.
Couldn’t help myself since we were in a dangerous place.
