Duluth Blues Concert

The most obvious movie for me for these few days is Blues Brothers.   While we do not have a homicidal maniac on the loose, sheriffs after us of Nazis that I know of at the concert, the music was wonderful.  I really have always enjoyed that movie and the music.  There was some rain while we were here but it didn’t interfere with the music and the clouds were a welcome relief from the brutal sun.

We arrived on Thursday morning very early for us since we had heard there were not a lot of electric sites and temps were predicted for the high 80’s to low 90’s.  That was an accurate prediction.   We were able to obtain an electric space and were very close to the action.  The concert did not start until Friday so we had a day to explore Duluth.  It is a very small city and at the end of the visit we went to pick up a rental car at the airport.  The airport is one level, there are 3 airlines that fly in and out and the arrival gate, departure gate, security, baggage claim and rental car counter is all contained in about 50 feet.   There is only one door to the terminal from the outside.  It reminded me of when I arrived in Saginaw over 45 years ago, except I think it was smaller than Saginaw International Airport.   The city has taken the lake front area and made it into an entertainment district with restaurants, museums and shopping.  There is also a very nice walkway along the lake.  We were able to walk from where we were parked to the restaurants for dinner on Thursday.   We enjoyed dinner and walking around the two-block area.  Everything is heavy on shopping and we do not shop, we are looking to rid ourselves of things, not increase our possessions.

The festival included everything you would expect, one old man with a long gray ponytail and a beret with jeans and a band tee shirt who believed he was still as hot as he was 50 years ago.   There was the mandatory nerd with four or five cameras around his neck with some kind of very large ID tag hanging around his neck.   He wore a baseball cap backwards with shorts, a stripped button-down short sleeve shirt with white socks and black shoes.  He is at every concert at the edge of the stage taking a zillion pictures.   Then there is dancing man!  This man is in his 50’s or 60’s with a very loud almost Hawaiian shirt, usually light cotton gray or black short, sandals and a floppy hat.  Dancing man will dance from the moment the first note is played until the very last.  He has arm movements that include punching the air, spinning around and air guitar.  Sometimes women who I believe to be drunk, because what else would explain the behavior, will come up to him and try to dance with him.  They will stand in front of him in his line of vision and start to dance.  Dancing man wants none of this as he is a solo act.  He will immediately turn away from them and then step away.  I have never seen this action fail, always the woman will pretend to be dancing with someone else.  This festival had the added attraction of a man dressed up all in light blue with hat, jacket, short pants and leggings as Captain Crunch.  Jerry and I had no idea what this was all about.  I love the music and we could hear the music at our RV space, but I enjoy the people watching almost as much.  Dancing man is probably my favorite person to watch.  If I haven’t seen every Dancing man I have ever seen reject the dance offer of a woman, I would be very tempted to join him.

While we were in Duluth we saw the pumpkin moon.  It was very cloudy or smokey at night, I’m not sure which so viewing was not optimal.  We double back through Duluth at the ending part of the trip, so we rented a car for about two weeks.  It has been good to have the car since the battery is still being funky, sometimes the RV starts right up and others we need to use the emergency start, anytime we can avoid starting the RV is fine by me.

If you haven’t seen Blues Brother’s recently it worth watching to listen to the music.
